Our project "Voyage" is for a family with its past in Asia & South America, settling down in the US. We focused on creating a new identity for their home to reflect the varied pasts of the new inhabitants - separately and as a family. We wanted to create a home which would honour their cultures and come together in spaces as unique as their own past and future experiences.
We were tasked with creating a home that would reflect the personalities and identities of its owners. In a rich suburb of Washington D.C. our clients - an immigrant family moving from Singapore but with diverse international roots - wanted a home that would bring together their varied interests and backgrounds in a space that they could feel comfortable, happy and proud in.
Our clients were a family of four with roots in Pakistan, Brazil and China. They were also ardent collectors with a deep interest in Pakistani art, Chinese antiques, mid-century furniture and artefacts from various travels and previous lives.
In this large sprawling home we allowed ourselves to switch gears from our extensive experience designing more compact Parisian homes where space optimisation is often primordial. Instead our challenge here was to create a fluidity and harmony between the different interests and objects lovingly collected over decades from across the world - without letting the spaces drown or disappear into a cabinet of curiosity.
