Viglostasi residence embraces Greek island vernacular

On a rocky outcrop overlooking the Aegean Sea, a family dwelling blends in harmony with the surrounding landscape. The Swiss House is a novel reinterpretation of traditional Swiss architecture

The Swiss House is a new building project by Polish architectural practice BXB studio Bogusław Barnaś. A contemporary reading of vernacular architecture, design for the Swiss House was informed by centuries-old traditions, geography, climate, and context. Set on a hilltop in the Ulju-gun region of South Korea’s eastern peninsula, Seosaeng House is a multi-generational family home whose contemporary architecture marries elements of traditional Korean vernacular. Haus Hoinka demonstrates the potential of straw bale construction

Haus Hoinka by Stuttgart-based Atelier Kaiser Shen is described as “a straw bale house in the village center.” Located in Pfaffenhofen, a small historic village close to the city of Heilbronn in south-western Germany, Haus Hoinka’s design is typical of the regional vernacular. In Bentonville, Arkansas, the Thaden School aims to establish an innovative concept for future education, while reflecting the rich, pastoral heritage of the landscape that surrounds it. New Alcalá church by Beautell Arquitectos takes a new approach to the traditional architecture of the Canary Islands

Since the 2011 demolition of the old Alcalá Church for security reasons, locals of the Canary Island neighbourhood have sought out the reconstruction of the lost temple which was under the invocation of the Virgin of Candelaria. In recent years, the Parish of Candelaria, the Bishopric of Tenerife, the Government of the Canary Islands and the City Council of Guía de Isora, joined forces to realize a new temple for Alcalá.  Flavio Dorta Designed by Beautell Arquitectos, the new church has a total built area of 1,1000 m2 over two levels. Huiming Tea Space integrates local She culture with Buddhist culture

Saltbox Passive House celebrates the rural building vernacular of Quebec’s Eastern Townships

In the Eastern Townships of Quebec, the Saltbox Passive House by  L’Abri is a 3100 square foot single-family home built on three levels. With a design that is inspired by the region’s architectural heritage, the home has also achieved LEED Platinum and PHIUS 2018+ certification. MIBI Rammed Earth Yoga Center demonstrates a ‘new vernacular’

On the ground floor of a residential building, the MIBI yoga centre by Elisabette Carnevale Arquitectura De Terra was built with prefabricated rammed earth blocks. La Garita house influenced by Costa Rican building traditions

In the small town of La Garita, Costa Rica, this house for a young couple is influenced by the building traditions of this old town and its strong relationship with its rural and natural surroundings.  Roberto D’Ambrosio Designed by arkosis, the house can be seen as an extension of the shade trees that border the ravine, which also defines the limit of the terrain. Looking to return to their homeland, this elderly couple based out of the Middle East wanted to build a comfortable retirement home near their ancestral home located in the Ayroor district of Kerala. The 0.5 acre plot, situated at the banks of Chalakudy river at the time was being used to cultivate indigenous vegetables, a practise the couple wished to continue even after their move. Minimalist Logan Pavilion designed to evolve over time

Located on a sagebrush plain north of Jackson, Wyoming, Logan Pavilion is a timeless and minimalist home designed to integrate with the landscape and meet the evolving needs of an architect’s family. Kevin Scott Originally constructed by Eric Logan, Design Principal at CLB Architects, on a tight budget and four-month construction schedule the home draws from the vernacular of the hay shed.
