Nagano HQ embraces the concept of an all-day living room

Danish architectural studio Norm Architects has completed the design of Nagano HQ in its distinctly “soft minimal” approach. A space that meshes a careful blend of materials and functionality, the Nagano HQ is a picture of warmth, calmness, and balance.

In today’s ever evolving working environment, traditional space boundaries are viewed as increasingly outmoded concepts, particularly as people engage in a variety of pursuits. “Single-use spaces are becoming obsolete, giving way to multifunctional environments that cater to diverse needs,” says Norm Architects. Nevertheless, it is often the case that companies overlook the role of design and its positive effects on physical spaces. In its approach to Nagano HQ, Norm Architects crafted spaces that embrace a minimalist aesthetic, thereby emphasizing materials and meticulous details. “By creating a refined and versatile workspace, we strive to deliver distinctive and memorable experiences for all stakeholders,” says the studio.

Nagano HQ is located in the city of Nagano in central Japan. The double-height reception has an art gallery-like air — a curated selection of artistic objects imbue the space with a sober yet uplifting ambience. To achieve this goal, Peter Eland of Norm Architects explains: “This led us to embrace a paired-back aesthetic, characterized by a clean color palette and carefully selected materials that exude both visual and physical weight, creating a space that commands attention while invoking a sense of tranquility.”

An exploration of tactility and its capacity to create an immersive experience is characteristic of Norm Architects’ design approach. The reception’s white granite panels with a “needle shot finish” add visual texture. To complement this, Norm Architects worked with contemporary lifestyle brand Karimoku Case Study to create bespoke furniture — mixing solid wood, soft upholstery, and architectural lines, the furniture adds another tactile dimension to the space. The artworks with their organic forms then create engaging and expressive moments for the reception’s visitors. “Through the thoughtful integration of these tactile elements, bespoke craftsmanship, and curated artworks, we aimed to create a reception area that transcends conventional boundaries,” says Norm Architects.

Stepping into the workspace, a carefully curated color palette bathes the interior in soft and soothing shades. The setting is a  balance between quiet repose and an atmosphere conducive to productivity. “It is a place that transcends the traditional notion of an office, embracing the concept of an all-day living room, where comfort and inspiration coexist,” says Norm Architects. Soft carpets on a stone floor delineate work areas, framing distinct furniture settings. A wooden lamella wall and door system provides a pleasing interior contrast: “This thoughtfully crafted addition not only adds a tactile dimension to the interior surface but also pays homage to the timeless craftsmanship found in Danish and Japanese culture alike,” says Frederik Werner of Norm Architects. The wooden panels, designed with integrated cabinets and alcoves, ensure the workspace remains both calm and free of clutter.

Large windows flood the space with natural light, creating a feeling of openness and a connection with nature. Norm Architects describes the workspace as “an embodiment of the captivating harmony between humanity and the natural world.” The concept of an all-day living room goes beyond the practical and often mundane notion of an everyday workspace environment — in Nagano HQ, its haptic design actively fosters creativity and cultivates connections.
