Viglostasi residence embraces Greek island vernacular

On a rocky outcrop overlooking the Aegean Sea, a family dwelling blends in harmony with the surrounding landscape. Designed by Athens-based architecture studio Block722, Viglostasi is a residence that appears almost like a traditional Greek settlement, a home with a storied past. On closer inspection, the villa reveals its contemporary make-up, its structure meticulously crafted to draw upon the typology of small Aegean villages — a cluster of low volumes, these picturesque villages typically sit on hillsides, overlooking the sea. George Pappas George Pappas The Viglostasi residence is located on Syros island, capital of the Cyclades in Greece. It was commissioned by a family who were inspired by Block722’s pr... もっと見る

Private house in Paros

The property is located in close proximity to the sea, but due to the nature of its topography, there is no direct view of it. The area has low grass and shrub vegetation and no existing natural protection from the sun. These factors, together with the investor’s wish for a house larger than the permitted above-ground construction on the island, are fundamental in the development of the project idea. Caption The house is completely sunken into the ground and consists of 13 modules with a square-shaped plan that are combined in different ways to create a spatial organization. The modules are divided into residential units and patio units with the basic principle being that each residential unit has at least one adjacent patio. Th... もっと見る

St. Minas House renovation realizes the potential of its connection to the sea

Located near the small village of St Minas, Greece, and overlooking the Euboea Sea, this summer house renovation by Neiheiser Argyros opens up to the landscape in all directions. In particular, two large shallow concrete arches orient the main living spaces towards the sea.  Lorenzo Zandri From the approach road, the house appears to disappear into olive groves and wild pines forests but opens up across two stories to embrace the full extent of the seafront views. Extensive terraces around the house create a multi-level network of outdoor living rooms. Lorenzo Zandri The original house on the site was designed by Greek architect Nikos Hadjimichalis in the 1970s. While the original house was also focused towards the sea, by... もっと見る

Sheltered Villas

Blending into a 12,000 sqm site in Karpathos, on a secluded area on the outwards of Menetes village, three villas make their appearance in the most humble way.   With a 23% site slope, the villas emerge from the landscape in a linear arrangement parallel to the view, respecting the natural topography. Placed amphitheatrically, the three villas have unobstructed views to the Aegean Sea while offering privacy and seclusion to their guests. A true relationship between indoor and outdoor, integrates the buildings to its surrounding. Guest Apartment in Exarchia

This 40m² (430ft²) apartment had been left incomplete since the end of the 1970s. Fourty years later we remodeled it for use as a guest apartment. We distingusished two zones on the floorplan based on the access to natural light. The zone at the back (kitchen) had limited light. To change that and to enhance the feeling of spaciousness, we created a unified open plan entrance/dining/kitchen area by demolishing an existing wall corner. To demarcate the different functions, we contrasted the light white kitchen with black metal frame furniture in the entrance and dining area. The other zone, closer to the balcony windows, had sufficient light. We kept this space separated into two rooms, a living room and a bedroom. We used col... もっと見る

Vacation House in Nea Artaki

This 212m² (2.282ft²) vacation house was built on a 425m² (4.575ft²) plot, that overlooks the Northern Gulf of the Island of Evia, Greece. The 2,50m (8,20ft) of difference in height between the eastern and the western side of the plot, as well as the need for an orientation of spaces towards the sea view were basic factors for the development of the layout of the building's functions. The house is accessible from Evripidou Street. A bridge, connecting the street with the main entrance on the northern side of the building, is the starting point of an axis, around which functions evolve on the floorplan. In order to save space, allow visual contact with the upper floor and to give the entrance hall a feeling of spacious... もっと見る

Two Residences in Ekali

The 1007m² (10.839 ft²) property, located in Athens' northern suburb Ekali (Greece), is facing both Rodon Avenue and Ikarias Street, with a mean of 3,60 m (11,81 ft) of height difference between the two streets. The wish of the client was to build two houses on the plot.We had to guarantee full independence of the two residences:separate entrances for vehicles and pedestrians, separate gardens, separate heating systems etc. The site's orientation (long sides facing southwest and northeast) and the concern for an optimal utilization of the remaining free space, when applying the houses' footprint on it, led us to the composition of an oblong building with the two houses appearing as a single structure. The dropping line of the pro... もっと見る

Residence in Voula

The plot of 570m² (6.135ft²) in the area of Voula in Athens (Greece), on which the residence was built, has the shape of an irregular pentagon. It is located at the junction of two streets: Elassonos Street (the lower one) and Prevezis Street (the upper one). This irregular shape, the fact that the planners had to respect the legally required distances from its boundaries, according to local building regulations, and the difference in height of approximately 9m (673ft) between the two streets, led the team to a solution of a building with an almost triangular floorplan, with its acute angle pointing to the junction of the two streets. The main entrance to the residence is from Prevezis Street. A bridge connects the street level t... もっと見る

Single Family House in Thiva

This house was built for a family of four – a young couple and their two children – at the southeastern outskirts of the town of Thiva, Greece. The corner lot of 4.300m² (46.285ft²) is in a privileged location, since it offers a panoramic view of the nearby woodland and farmland. It is accessible from its western edge, the Sofokleous country road. At the final stage of preliminary design, we developed a single-storey solution, with the basement of the residence only containing secondary functions, such as storage rooms, the heating boiler room, the laundry room and the garage. This solution has aesthetic and functional advantages: we were able to use the whole of the 205m² (2.207ft²) allowed by building reg... もっと見る

Inside - Out

The “sculptured skin” of the new housing complex reveals the meaning of its name, Inside-Out. It is an invaluable three-dimensional envelope with sun breaker-shelves along the façades interspersed with windows that can be opened completely, solid inserts and protruding volumes. Allowing one to sense what is happening in the interior – in other words, the structure of the building and the apartments – the system of the perimetric façades emphasises the borders with the domestic areas, continuing to above the roofing to include the open, protected space of the roof garden with swimming pool. The elegant architectural design has opted for doors and windows with the SA 20 system in painted galvanised steel,... もっと見る

Tower House I

Tower-house I interprets the form of dwelling, widely found throughout the outer Mani, southern Greece. This form, a combination of defense tower and farmhouse, was articulated by a monolithic, stone structure with few openings, so as to protect dwellers from extensive heat as well as piracy. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dry stone retaining walls transforming a steep topography into a series of arable plateaus. The new Tower-house contemplates exactly this; a volume among existing preserved retaining walls and a few new concrete ones. There are no seams at the white, stucco facades, only the dark frames of the apertures. No elements project from the main volume, except the steel frame in front of the west facade, accommodati... もっと見る

Triple family residence

The building will be constructed on a plot facing the south, on the suburbs of Kos town, in a neighborhood with few yet built-up plots. It will consist of a ground apartment and two apartments on the upper floor. The building is placed mirrored to the existing block of flats, to the west. This will protect the vital zone on either side of the common boundary, which will provide both blocks of flats with light, while creating good neighborly conditions. All the five facades of the construction (including the roof garden and the "blind" eastern facade) are composed of the absolutely necessary elements. The main components of the construction are clearly distinguishable from the secondary ones. The framework is freely displayed and contributes a... もっと見る

TZIA

The concept of this summer house in Tzia is derived from a close study of the methods of land sculpting and terracing traditionally employed by the islanders to produce horizontal surfaces suited to cultivation. The building’s section steps are designed in harmony with the landscape to create a sequence of public and private spaces.
