Located in Menorca, Balearic Islands, this summer home for a large family was designed by OOAA Arquitectura to respond to the particular nature of the site’s orientation and the challenges it presented.
The existing site is blessed with panoramic ocean views to the North, while the southern side opens to street and is exposed to overlooking views from the surrounding neighbourhood.
As such, OOAA developed a scheme centralized around a large central beam that allows optimal light into the interior spaces while still conditioning and sheltering the house from surrounding neighbourhood views. Though appearing blind to the street, the house is bright and luminous inside.
A series of walls and patios creates a sequencing of layers and spatial experiences as one moves from the streetscape to the inner realms. In line with the spirit of Mediterranean architecture, the house opens and closes throughout this progression, ultimately expanding in a grand way towards the strong light and views of the sea.
The material palette is monochromatic and simple, featuring Campaspero stone flooring, Revoke façade cladding, and wooden doors custom designed by OOAA.
